Marine Ecosystems Group

Manager: Richard C. Cassín, Ph.D,  Biological Oceanographer

Ganda’s Marine Ecosystems Group assists federal, state, and  local public agencies and private sector clients in producing the scientific information essential for the conservation and management of the Pacific Basin’s fish, marine mammals and turtles, seabirds, and invertebrates, and we provide research on the impacts of environmental variability and climate change on marine ecosystems, fisheries, and the socio-economics of conservation. The Group’s scientists conduct biological, oceanographic, archaeological, and socio-economic research on marine resources throughout the Pacific Region to assist agencies responsible for the health and sustainability of these ecosystems.

Our Marine Ecosystems Group has extensive experience in almost all aspects of fisheries research - including molecular genetics - and in the study and management of endangered or protected marine mammals and sea turtles, with particular emphasis on cetacean and pinniped ecosystems modeling and research in support of NOAA’s enforcement of the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Our Marine Ecosystems Group has extensive experience with large cetaceans such as the California Gray Whale, the Blue Whale, Humpbacks, and others, including several dolphin species where fishery by-catch is an issue. Some GANDA personnel have been pioneers in the use of DNA technology to understand the population genetics of protected marine species and commercially important fish stocks.
