Assistant Biologist - Oakland, CA

We are seeking to fill an entry-level position at our Oakland office to support staff and project managers with writing, report production, other office duties, and field surveys and monitoring. Some travel would be required throughout California.

Successful applicants will have a bachelor’s degree in biology or a related environmental field. Minimum qualifications include strong writing and editing skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office, and the ability to conduct field investigations and coordinate with outside agencies and clients. Senior Biologist

Garcia and Associates (GANDA) is seeking a Senior Biologist to work in their San Francisco office. GANDA currently provides on call natural resource consulting services to a variety of clients including Pacific Gas & Electric Company, Caltrans, Caltrain, the Navy, Forest Service, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and many local utility districts.

The ideal candidate for this position will have the following qualifications:

Master’s degree in biology
>10 years experience in natural resource consulting
Excellent writing, communication, and analytical skills
Strong knowledge of California flora and fauna
Strong knowledge of environmental regulations (Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, CEQA, NEPA, etc.) and permitting
Strong knowledge of state and federal survey protocols for special status species
Expertise in one or more listed species and permits for threatened and endangered species research (e.g. 10(a)(1)(A) permit)
Enthusiasm for natural resource conservation and planning

The duties of this position will include:

Preparing study plans, proposals and various reports (Biological Assessments, Wetland Delineations, Natural Environment Studies, Initial Biological Studies, Constraints Analyses, Conservation Strategies, etc.)
Reviewing and editing of reports
Data analysis
Leading field crews of 1 to 10 biologists
Business development

Field Botanist

Garcia and Associates (GANDA) seeks to hire several full-time botanists to assist with field surveys in California. Minimum qualifications include a B.A. or B.S. degree in botany or a closely related field, and three years of professional field botany experience in California. Desirable skills include: demonstrated knowledge of local rare and sensitive plant species and their associated habitats, expertise with Garmin and Trimble GPS units, experience with Microsoft Office, and experience driving 4WD vehicles. Responsibilities: conducting rare plant surveys and vegetation community mapping. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated plant taxonomic skills with the flora of the Mojave Desert.

Senior Biological Consultant / Regional Manager

Senior Biological Consultant sought to manage the San Diego, CA regional office of Garcia and Associates (GANDA), a natural and cultural resources consulting firm. We are seeking an energetic seasoned professional with a proven track record in business procurement and project and staff management. The ideal candidate will have an MS or PhD in a biological or related discipline; strong writing skills; and experience and contacts in Southern the California region. Experience with US DoD base regulations and requirements preferable. A strong working knowledge of NEPA, CEQA, Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, and other local, state, and federal environmental legislation is required. Specific expertise on Southern California ecosystems and experience on DoD bases is preferred. Experience with working on large infrastructure projects is beneficial.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be in charge of managing our San Diego Office in support of a recently awarded substantial DoD contract on biological studies. Principal responsibility will be managing the afore-mentioned contract that includes a number of subcontractors. He/she will be in charge of marketing and procurement to maintain workload; Q/A, Q/C of all projects and work performed in this office; project management; liaison with other GANDA offices; and performing technical project work in his/her area of expertise. Senior Aquatic Ecologist

Responsibilities: Job responsibilities include leading a team of several aquatic biologists. Applicant will provide senior fisheries or benthic macroinvertebrate expertise and will be responsible for technical oversight of aquatics projects, project management, and some business development. Typical projects include impact assessment, mitigation planning, technical writing, data analysis, and modeling in compliance with NEPA, state environmental quality acts, FERC regulations, ESA, etc. Position will entail a combination of field and office work. Applicant must be willing and able to work on a variety of tasks and issues and handle tight deadlines.

Qualifications: The person hired will be based in the San Anselmo, San Francisco, or Auburn CA offices. Minimum education is an M.S. degree in aquatic ecology, fisheries science or related field. Experience in consulting, especially with aquatic resource impact assessments pertaining to hydropower and water resource development, is highly desirable. Qualified applicants will possess solid writing, communication, and computer skills, and be familiar with standard fisheries sampling and analytical techniques. Experience with hydrology, geomorphology, stream habitat assessment, and water quality assessment is also desirable.
