Temporary Field Technician - Island Fox Monitoring - San Clemente Island, CA

Several individuals needed for rugged field work in unique environment.  Garcia and Associates (GANDA) is conducting research on San Clemente island fox, a federally threatened species.  Must be able to work for the full research period, approximately June 27 to July 23, 2008.  Possibility of re-hire in subsequent years as this is year 2 of a 5-year study.  

The work is on San Clemente Island, a US Navy base.  Likely schedule is 5 days on, 1 day off for a total of ~4.5 weeks.  All days off must be spent on the island however.  Expected hours will average 10 per day for each 5-day period.  Housing will be provided in dorms (2 same-sex people per room) and meals are provided by Navy galley.  Adherence to professional conduct and Navy regulations is absolutely required while on island.

The work entails live trapping island foxes; 120 traps per night.  Person would be responsible to hike trap line to bait traps; move traps at end of each trapping period; locate traps to new grid using GPS; assist fox handling crew checking traps in the morning by hiking ahead and notifying crew of where there are captures, and holding foxes while they are being processed (weighed, measured, examined, etc.). Each grid has 40 traps and is 1000x1750 meters in rugged terrain. 

Key requirement:  excellent physical condition.   Willing and able to hike for 6-10 hours a day in rugged terrain, abundant cacti, loose rock etc.  Must be able to carry up to 50 pounds in a backpack.  Must generally be willing to help out when needed in all aspects of the job.  Likely schedule – pre-dawn to noon, and 4PM to dark, but this can vary depending on job needs. 

Animal handling skills (especially small canids), veterinary tech skills (e.g. drawing blood), attention to detail in recording data, and overall good field skills are also important.

This is a fun and interesting research project on a federally threatened species.  It does require hard physical work….!!

Field Botanist

Garcia and Associates (GANDA) seeks to hire several full-time botanists to assist with field surveys in California. Minimum qualifications include a B.A. or B.S. degree in botany or a closely related field, and three years of professional field botany experience in California. Desirable skills include: demonstrated knowledge of local rare and sensitive plant species and their associated habitats, expertise with Garmin and Trimble GPS units, experience with Microsoft Office, and experience driving 4WD vehicles. Successful applicant must possess competent technical writing skills, have an excellent driving record, be able to travel, and be willing to work in remote locations.

Responsibilities: conducting rare plant surveys and vegetation community mapping. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated plant taxonomic skills with the flora of the Mojave Desert.

Senior Biological Consultant / Regional Manager

Senior Biological Consultant sought to manage the San Diego, CA regional office of Garcia and Associates (GANDA), a natural and cultural resources consulting firm. We are seeking an energetic seasoned professional with a proven track record in business procurement and project and staff management. The ideal candidate will have an MS or PhD in a biological or related discipline; strong writing skills; and experience and contacts in Southern the California region. Experience with US DoD base regulations and requirements preferable. A strong working knowledge of NEPA, CEQA, Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, and other local, state, and federal environmental legislation is required. Specific expertise on Southern California ecosystems and experience on DoD bases is preferred. Experience with working on large infrastructure projects is beneficial.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be in charge of managing our San Diego Office in support of a recently awarded substantial DoD contract on biological studies. Principal responsibility will be managing the afore-mentioned contract that includes a number of subcontractors. He/she will be in charge of marketing and procurement to maintain workload; Q/A, Q/C of all projects and work performed in this office; project management; liaison with other GANDA offices; and performing technical project work in his/her area of expertise. Ecologist/Wetlands Biologist - Guam

GIS Specialist in Oakland, California

Garcia and Associates, a natural and cultural resources consulting firm, seeks a GIS Specialist for its Oakland, CA, office. Candidates will be skilled in an ESRI-based production environment, specifically ArcGIS 9.2.

Responsibilities include obtaining and managing spatial data from a variety of sources, incorporation of data into on-going projects with the development of associated geodatabases, preparation of maps and map-based graphics, and transfer of GIS data. The specialist integrates project-based data for eight western regional offices in the states of California, Hawaii, Montana, and the island of Guam. Duties will include coordinating with field staff in use of GPS units (Trimble, Garmin devices); GPS instruction, data transfer, differential correction, plotting, and map production.  Candidates will have knowledge and skills in: 

 

At minimum, candidates shall have a bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, Natural Resource Management, or related degree with a majority of coursework in GIS and a minimum of 2 years professional experience.

Wildlife biologists for blunt-nosed leopard lizard surveys

Garcia and Associates (GANDA), a natural and cultural resources consulting firm, is seeking to hire up to 3 biologists to conduct blunt-nosed leopard lizard (BNLL) surveys starting April 14. Surveys entail walking transects (10-30 meters apart) and stopping periodically to scan for BNLL using binoculars. Surveys start at sunrise and continue while air temperature is between 25C-35C. Surveyors will distinguish BNLL from other common lizard species that may inhabit the area.

Successful applicants will have a bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field and applicable field experience. Willingness and ability to walk all day in relatively rugged terrain with loose rock is required. Must have binoculars (minimum 7x35 magnification).

Pay range is $15-$30/hour commensurate with experience and qualifications. Lodging and meal allowance provided.

Botanist & Wildlife Biologist - San Francisco Area & Throughout California

GIS Technician/Botanist - Bozeman

Garcia and Associates (GANDA), a natural and cultural resources consulting firm, has an immediate openings for a GIS Technician/Botanist. This position will be staffed in our Bozeman office.

The selected candidate will combine GIS skills and botanical expertise. They will provide GIS support to projects in Montana, and other GANDA offices in California, Hawaii, and Guam.  The GIS Technician will organize GIS data, generate maps for review, and assist GIS Specialists in other offices.  Duties will include coordinating with field staff in use of GPS units; GPS instruction, data transfer, differential correction, plotting and map production. Proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS software and Microsoft Access is required; as is expertise with Garmin and Trimble GPS units.
Botany skills should include knowledge of rare and sensitive plants and their habitats, and noxious weeds in Montana; knowledge of California flora a plus. Knowledge of wetland plants, and an ability to delineate wetlands also a definite plus. Field work in both Montana and California is expected; candidate will need excellent driving record, be able to travel, and be willing to work in remote locations.

Minimum qualifications include a B.A. or B. S. degree in Geography, Botany, Biology, or a closely related field, and two years of professional experience. Strong communication and organizational skills and an attention to detail are essential.
This position is temporary, but depending on the company’s workload, may turn into a permanent position for a well-qualified applicant. We prefer an applicant who can work full-time, but will consider applicants interested in part-time work.
